Local business schema is a small block of code that spells out your business facts for Google in a format it doesn't have to guess at. It confirms who you are, where you are, when you're open, and which profiles belong to you. It only helps if every detail matches what Google already sees everywhere else.
Schema ends the guessing. It's a short block of code, usually written in a format called JSON-LD, that sits in your page and labels each fact. It doesn't change how your site looks. Visitors never see it. Google reads it like a filled-out form.
Most sites we look at don't have zero schema. They have some. And that's the trap. Partial schema feels finished, so nobody checks it again. Meanwhile, it's quietly telling Google an incomplete or wrong story about your business: missing fields, two blocks that fight each other, schema on the homepage only, stale data, or code that was never tested.
One location? Your full local business block goes on one main page. Multiple locations? Each location gets its own page with its own block — exact address, phone, hours, and coordinates — naming the parent business, with each Google Business Profile linking to its matching location page. Service-area businesses keep hidden addresses private and list the areas they serve.
Hold off if you don't have a real website yet, your business details are about to change, your site is getting rebuilt, Google isn't indexing your pages, or you don't serve local customers. Single-location owners with stable hours can often set up a basic block themselves and verify it with Google's Rich Results Test.
Any company with a physical spot customers visit or a set area it serves, like a shop, clinic, or contractor. If people come to your door or you drive out to them, you qualify for local business schema.
Schema.org lists hundreds of types, but you only need a handful. The one that matters most is the most specific type that fits you, such as Dentist, AutoRepair, or Restaurant, instead of a generic LocalBusiness label.
It confirms facts Google already sees about you — name, address, hours, and phone number — so it doesn't have to guess. It removes doubt, so Google has one clear, matching answer when it decides who to show nearby searchers.
